Young People Count have completed the works at their new home at 17 Railway Street, Pocklington, which were partly funded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of Commuted Sums funded by local housing developments.

Young People Count were awarded £13,600 from Commuted Sums, and this has allowed YPC to install Burglar Alarms, Fire Alarms, a CCTV system, Disability Access including a disabled toilet, and new frontage and signage at the property. This funding also contributed to solicitors' fees.

In addition to the Commuted Sums funding, Young People Count received £10,000 from Love Your High Street, £10,000 from FJH Property Solutions and raised £20,000 in fundraising activities towards the larger £65,000 project of moving to their new home.

Tony Barker, Project Manager, said: "The Pocklington-based youth charity, YPC, has used its share of £13,600 in Commuted Sums through East Riding of Yorkshire Council to help refurbish its new premises, providing 11-18 year olds in the town and surrounding areas with their first dedicated youth venue since 2013.  The YPC building is due to open in Spring 2021 in Railway Street, with a range of creative spaces, café bar, a homework hub, and a VR room."

Claire Reading, Chair of Trustees, added: "We're so grateful for the funding as we have been hard at work re-developing two floors of the former shop, which will give a real boost to young people. We're planning a whole range of exciting activities once it is safe to open and are also recruiting volunteers to staff the venue and help support our work."

Councillor Gary McMaster, portfolio holder for enhancing communities, said: "This is an excellent project in Pocklington, and I am delighted that we have been able to facilitate these improvements through Commuted Sums, provided by local housing developments as a condition of their planning approval."

The building is expected to be open initially from 4pm-8pm on weekdays.
