Relationship Matters website launched to help families

Mon, 11 May 2020

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has teamed up with 14 other authorities across the region to launch a new website for families.

Relationship Matters is a new partnership which offers information, tips and advice on how to overcome tensions, remain calm and where you can go to get further help.

The COVID-19 restrictions have led to big changes in the way people lead their everyday lives, and the new website www.relationshipmatters.org.uk is aimed at people in relationships where things are mostly respectful, equal and cooperative but they are experiencing difficulties.

Relationship Matters aims to help everyone recognise the signs where conflict may be having an impact on families and children

  • Are you arguing, rowing, or shouting about things like money, how you parent or housework?
  • Are you worried about splitting up?
  • Is there sulking, silent treatment, slamming doors or walking away from each other?
  • Are you anxious or worried, which is getting in the way of managing everyday life?
  • Are you not able to say sorry after an argument and move on?
  • Are you using hurtful texts, emails or social media against each other?

Councillor Julie Abraham, portfolio holder for children, young people and education at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "Whether couples are together or separated, disagreements are completely normal but evidence shows that regular conflict has a big impact on children.

"All relationships have tricky moments, it is how they are resolved that matters, especially at the moment for getting us through enforced self- isolation, lock down and social distancing.

"We are all spending longer periods of time with our loved ones and this is bound to bring about some added challenges."

If there are any concerns around controlling or coercive behaviour, violence or fear, families should seek advice from domestic violence services in the East Riding.
