Important Announcement - Citizenship Services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council

Due to circumstances beyond our control the Citizenship Office at East Riding of Yorkshire Council is to be suspended with immediate effect. This includes Nationality Checking Service, Nationality Document Return Service, Settlement Checking Service and the European Passport Return Service. 

Citizenship Ceremonies are not included in these changes and will continue as usual.

What is the Nationality Document Checking Service (NCS)?

The Nationality Checking Service is provided by some councils. We can accept and forward your application for British citizenship to the Home Office. We will ensure that your form is correctly completed, and will copy your documents and return them to you at the end of your appointment. We will ensure that your application is correctly submitted.

Please be aware that it is the applicant's responsibility to check with the Home Office that all documents, and in particular qualifications are acceptable and up to date as the criteria is subject to regular change.

Where is the Nationality Document Checking Service available?

We offer this service from our registration offices at Goole, Cottingham and Beverley. Anyone living in any district can use any of the nationality document checking centres throughout the country.

How much does the Nationality Checking Service cost?

We will charge you a fee of £75 per adult application £35 per child application. 

Please note: that these fees are in addition to the normal fee you must pay to the Home Office on processing your application for nationality. Home Office fees may be paid by card or cheque (made payable to the accounting officer at Home Office). We cannot send cash to the Home Office. We regret that we cannot make appointments where fees are not paid in advance and we cannot refund the fee if you do not attend your appointment.

Where can I get nationality advice?

We are not able to give you advice about nationality. We can only check that you have the correct paperwork and that your application has been completed 
properly. We cannot give immigration advice or act for you after you have made your application.

How do I get a citizenship application form?

Do I have to make an appointment for the Nationality Checking Service?

The service is run on an appointment basis. When making your appointment you will be asked various personal details such as your name, address and contact number, your Life in the United Kingdom test identification number. We will also require the full fee in order to be able to secure your appointment date and time.

What happens during my appointment?

During the appointment we will check that:

  • you are sending the correct fee to the Home Office
  • all the right documents are enclosed
  • we will photocopy your passports, travel documents and any other documents requested by the Home Office and certify that they are true copies
  • we will inform you of any outstanding documents required and hold your application until it is fully completed before sending the Home Office
  • we will send your completed application, certified photocopies of your passports and all other documents and fees to the Home Office
  • we will return passports and other documents to you at the end of your appointment.

Can a husband and wife apply together?

Yes, a husband and wife can apply and attend the appointment together. 

If making a joint application all persons over the age of 18 years who are applying for British citizenship must attend the NCS appointment.

Can I apply for a British passport at the same time?

Yes, we now offer a Joint Citizenship and Passport application service (JCAP). This easy, efficient service has been developed in partnership with the Home Office. Just bring along a completed passport application form which is available from post offices and a cheque or postal order for the passport fee. A fee of £10 is required for this additional service.

Is there an additional fee for a JCAP appointment?

Yes, there is an additional fee of £10 for a JCAP appointment, this is in addition the the passport application fee which is payable to the Home Office.

Is there any difference in completing a passport application form for a JCAP appointment?

Applicants should complete sections 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 (if applicable) and 9 of the passport application form. They do not need to complete section 10 nor have the 2 photographs certified. Details of referees will be collected as part of the citizenship application.

The photographs submitted with both applications must be identical (i.e. from the same sitting) and comply with the photo standards as described in the accompanying guidance. Applicant’s name should be written on the back of the photographs.

Any applicant within 6 months of their 16th birthday at the time of application must attend the appointment in person.

Section 2

Please do not enter a mobile phone number in section 2 of the application form. Please enter it in Section 8 instead.

Section 4

Grandparents’ details are not required.

The payment mandate on Page 25 of the application guidance must be completed. Please ensure that the security number of the card is entered in the appropriate box. If you are unsure about any requirements leave the section of the form blank and complete it at your appointment. 

What happens after you send my application to the Home Office?

Once we have sent your application, all enquiries about your application should be made directly to the Home Office. We will give you a special delivery reference number. Use this to confirm the delivery of your application. You can do this by searching your reference number on the Royal Mail website:

If your citizenship application is successful and a ceremony is attended, your new passport will be dispatched to your home. 

Where can I have my citizenship ceremony if my application is successful?

You will receive an automatic invitation to attend a citizenship ceremony in the district where you live. However, you may attend any other district for your 
ceremony. Please make your selection when completing your application form which is available on the Gov.uk website. You can choose which statement is appropriate to what you are applying for:

What do I do if I want to complain about the service I receive?

If you have a complaints, comments and compliments about the service, please let us know. Tell a member of staff immediately. It is always nice to know we are doing well and, if we are not, simple mistakes or misunderstandings can often be sorted out straightaway. 

We will give you a customer satisfaction form to complete when you arrive for your appointment.
