Finding, borrowing, renewing, returning and collecting library items. See also late loans, lost cards and library fees and charges. 

What can I borrow from the library?

You can borrow up to 12 books, 6 eBooks, 8 audio books, 4 eAudiobooks, 8 DVDs and 8 CDs at any one time.

Search the library catalogue (external website) for the items you would like to order. 

You will need your library card number and PIN.

How do I get my PIN?

When you join the library a PIN is automatically generated for you. If you want to reset your PIN to something more memorable or you have forgot your PIN, you can reset it.Reset Your PIN (external website) 

Alternatively, your PIN can be issued or changed in person at any East Riding of Yorkshire branch library or mobile library.

How do I find, renew and reserve books and other items from the library?

You can do this in person at any East Riding branch library, mobile library or online using our library catalogue or library app.

In person

Visit any East Riding branch library or mobile library and browse the library items at your leisure. All our branch libraries except Leven Library have self-service kiosks where you can borrow, return and renew items yourself.

You can't reserve items using our self-service kiosks so please speak to a member of staff and they will reserve items for you. 

Leven Library and all mobile libraries don't have a self-service kiosk so you will need to do all your transactions at the counter with a member of staff. 

You can renew books, audiobooks, CD's and DVD's up to three times as long as they are not on a waiting list for another library customer.

You can find, renew, reserve and much more online using our Library Catalogue and Library App:

Renewing eAudiobooks

You can renew your eAudiobooks by logging onto our  eAudiobook website (external website) 

Renewing eBooks

Due to licensing restrictions, it is not possible to renew eBooks.

Do I have to pay if my library loans are late?

Under 18s and senior citizens do not pay overdue charges. With your library card number and PIN you can sign up in Your Account (external website) for a reminder by text or email that your loans are due back in three days time.

Charges for overdue items - per item, per week or part week

£0.10 per day open in first week to 50p, 50p per week thereafter. £10 maximum overdue charge per item. Senior Citizens, children, teenagers, young adults, users of mobile libraries do not pay charges on overdue items.

How long can I borrow library books and other items for?

If you use a branch library, books, audiobooks and CDs can be borrowed for up to 21 days. DVDs are borrowed for seven days.

If you use a mobile library, everything can be borrowed for up to 28 days. This is due to the frequency of visiting days.

You can select the loan period for eBooks and eAudiobooks (up to a maximum of 21 days) when you download them.

You can check which items you have on loan and when they are due for return by signing into Your Account (external website) using your library card and PIN. You will then be able to renew your items online.

How do I tell the library if I have changed my address or contact details?

If you have moved home, bring a current proof of address to any library with your name, new address and signature.  For example, your updated driving licence which has all three, or a current utility bill and a bank card. A member of staff will be happy to alter your membership details.

If you have changed your email address or telephone number you can alter your details by signing into Your Account (external website) with your library card and PIN.

What do I do if I lose my library card, books or other items?

Please notify your local library in person or by telephone as soon as you notice your card or library loans are missing.  Staff will be able to cancel your card to ensure no one else can use it.

If you have lost or damaged an item you may be charged up to the full replacement cost. When you contact your local library, staff will be able to help you or renew the item to give you longer to search for it.

If you have lost or damaged a book from the inter-library loan system or the British Library the replacement charge will be decided by that organisation. Your local library will find out the replacement charge for you.

Can I ask someone else to collect, return or renew my library loans for me?

Yes, you can ask someone else collect, return or renew your library loans, but you are still responsible for any books taken in your name.
